The Murals

The Murals is a play by Howard Pflanzer about the struggle  over the artist Victor Arnautoff’s murals at George Washington High School in San Francisco. There is an effort by some parents and students to remove the Arnautoff murals because they oppose the display of Blacks in slavery and also the deaths of Native Americans during the Westward Expansion supported by President George Washington. The play reflects the views of those in favor of the removal and those opposed. This ongoing struggle continues over whether the murals stay or are removed and destroyed remains a controversial issue in San Francisco. It is also an issue that is taking place throughout the United States.
