PerspectiveS: ROBESON, PAPA DOC, THE MASK IN THE MIRROR (2014)

“Robeson” by Adolphus Hailstork, on a libretto by Shaunelle Perry, deals with the life and times of the great , actor, and humanitarian. The opera uses projected visuals and a narrator. It is a fully staged piece with sets and costumes. “Papa Doc”, by Dorothy Rudd Moore on a libretto by Richard Wesley, taken from the book CREATE DANGEROUSLY by Edwidge Danticat, is a chamber opera that uses childrens’ chorus. This dictator executed his own people for opposing his thoughts. The opera describes his life and those affected by it. The “Mask in the Mirror” is written by Richard Thompson. The full opera deals with struggles of Dunbar to have his work heard. The relarionship with the women in his life and the critics of his poetry.
