Legacy of the Land Through Art
For more than 40 years, Legacy Land Conservancy has worked to protect local forests, prairies, farms, wetlands, and waters. These special lands in Washtenaw & Jackson Counties—now more than 5,000 acres—will be preserved forever, to provide scenic and spiritual sustenance to present and future generations.
In this corner of Michigan, the abundance of nature shapes our lives. We give special meaning to the land. An important part of Legacy’s mission is to foster this connection between land and people. At events throughout the year, we invite the community to celebrate, learn about, enjoy, and support protected lands.
In the spirit of this tradition, we reached out to area artists for a mixed-media fine arts exhibition, Legacy of the Land Through Art. The show is open to artists living and/or working in the region served by Legacy Land Conservancy.
As part of Legacy of the Land Through Art, artists were chosen to create works about specific public and private lands preserved through the Conservancy. Artists were assigned to a particular property and created works inspired by their direct physical experience with the property and, in many cases, the landowner. Many of these protected lands are home to rare plants or endangered wildlife; many have unusual natural features. Many of the sites are not open to the public, making this project an uncommon opportunity for artists to connect to unique landscapes.
Chosen works of art will be exhibited and offered for purchase at the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens (1800 North Dixboro Road, Ann Arbor, MI) from October 12 through November 10, 2013 and at Sandhill Crane Vineyards (4724 Walz Road, Jackson, Michigan) from February 1 through March 9, 2014. The pieces are also available for viewing and purchase on Legacy’s website.
